Enabling Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Screen Shots
Bethseda, for whatever reason, disabled the ability to take screen shots in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Their reasons for this are beyond me, but it’s a matter of much annoyance as we can clearly see from the numerous posts on messages forums. I half way expect this to be patched.
This is how you can enable screen shots from within the game so that you do not have to use a third party program.
You may have read instructions that say to edit the INI file. This is true, but there’s a catch: It turns out that Oblivion uses two INI files and each are stored in a seperate location. You will have to edit both INI files to enable screen shots; or at least I had to edit both.
The first INI file is located in the folder that you installed the game to. This is most likely the one that you’ve edited and yet find yourself still unable to take screen shots.
Here’s what you do:
- close Oblivion if the game is running
- open the folder that your game is installed to
- Open the file Oblivion_default.ini in any text editor (note pad, EditPad, etc.)
- find where it says [Display]
- find where it says bAllowScreenShot=0
- change the 0 to a 1, so that it now reads bAllowScreenShot=1
- save the file and exit
Now to edit the second INI file.
- close the game if it’s running
- go to “My Documents”
- from there, go to “My Games”
- Open the “Oblivion” folder
- Open Oblivion.ini in any text editor
- find where it says bAllowScreenShot=0
- change the 0 to a 1, so that it now reads bAllowScreenShot=1
- save the file, and close the text editor
Now the next time that you run The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion you should be able to take screen shots by pressing the Print Screen (or PrntScrn) button on your keyboard. The screen shots will be saved to the folder in which the game is installed. They are saved in the BMP file format, which any Windows image viewer can load.
To convert the file to a JPG I highly recommend the use of Irfanview.
Have fun!
