Things That Breathe In The Night

Last night I went to bed pretty early. I had to get up this morning for my first on-campus job and, luckily, I was actually tired enough to get the sleep that I needed.

At some point during the night I was momentarily awakened by a bump behind me. I’m not sure what it was, but I do have a small pile of odds-and-ends at that end of my bed. I rolled over and thought little of it, and tried to get back to sleep.

Right as I was dozing off I was awakened again, but this time by something a bit more difficult to explain than a random bump in the night: I heard something exhale maybe a foot away from my face. The exhale sounded as though someone had previously taken a deep breath and then softly let it out.

It wasn’t threatening and I also did not feel any other presence in my room with me. I lay in bed awake and tried to ignore what I had just heard, telling myself that I had to get up in the morning and there were no exceptions.

So I rolled back over and concentrated on getting back to sleep. A moment later I heard something rub across the carpet behind me in roughly the same location as I had heard the bump.

Shortly there after I went back to sleep.
