This is something which occurred when I was very little. Little enough, in fact, to have still been sleeping with my folks. This is one of the shorter tales that I have.
So, what is paranormal and “scary” to the very young? Was it a ghost, a dream, or something else entirely?
The door into the room was on the wall which the foot of the bed faced. As I generally done I was laying awake in bed, my folks on either side of me.
It has been so many years that I don’t remember if the door was opened or closed, either way, a pair of white, rectangle eyes came bouncing into the room. By “bouncing” I mean that their movement was as if they were on a four legged creature which lumbered from left then to right as it stepped. They tilted quite heavily from side to side.
In the middle of the white eyes were square pupils.
This strange occurrence was quite scary to my young self and I promptly covered up my head. I then thought to myself, “What if they float in through the foot of the covers? Ghosts can do that!”, which they promptly did do.
I remember becoming very scared, but other than that, I don’t recall what happened next.
Short story, eh? True. My best guess is that I created the experience, since I was laying there thinking about things and - always being a strange fellow - I was probably thinking about spookily things. This, and the fact that they floated under the covers from the foot of the bed as I thought about it, leads me to wonder if it was some sort of manifestation of my own making.
Was I asleep? Nope. It wasn’t uncommon for me to lay awake at night. It seems that I’ve always been a bit of a night owl, and it’s not uncommon to think of young children as having either psychic or similar abilities. Think: Invisible friends.
