Sensitivity / Empathy
The other day I made a post on the TAPS (Scifi: Ghost Hunters) 18+ forum about sensitivity, otherwise commonly thought of as Empathy. My post there, which can be read here (requires registration), was in response to someone saying that if we really had ESP then we would all be rich and living perfect lives.
The response that I made there makes for a good first post to re-introduce Shadows In Motion to the topics of the paranormal, the spiritual, and the esoteric. Not without a sense of humor, I want to mention that earlier today I was struck with the similarities to Betazoids on Star Trek: The Next Generation. I was watching the show and was almost taken aback by how well it represented the experience; at least, how the experience can be from time-to-time.
Of course, the Betazoid characters on TNG are an exaggeration of the real experience.
So without further ado, here is my response on the subject of sensitivity / empathy:
Not necessarily. The impressions received (in my case, at least) are of emotions and similar… experiences. They’re not knowledge such as lottery numbers, sporting event out comes, or other specific pieces of information.
For example, I can feel that my father - who is getting up in age - is becoming very concerned about dieing. He wants to spend more time with me but he doesn’t know how to approach me and he’s affraid to come right out and say it because it would make him feel… sappy? Not man-like? He’s rather old fashioned like that. He always wants to be tough. He won’t ask for help in _anything_.
I can feel when he talks to me that he’s attempting to tell me this without saying it out right, and that he regrets the small ammount of time that he and I have spent together. I can also feel that he’s really scared of dieing.
Sometimes I even receive these feelings at night when trying to sleep and it will keep me awake. He often tells me that he was unable to get to sleep the night before, or stayed up until such-and-such time.
Rich? That depends on how you define being rich, I suppose. These are the type of experiences that sensitivity brings.
…and there you have my reponse. Remember, the word “Rich?” is in reference to the other poster saying that we would all be rich and be living perfect lives if we actually had ESP.
My point was to explain that the experience is not something that one can use to increase their monetary wealth. That, typically in my case, it’s not the reception of specific knowledge. I also wanted to indirectly point out that some may not consider it a blessing.

Hey, I ran across your blog while looking for people writing on these subjects and I just wanted to say I agree with what you wrote on empathy, sensitivity, and being rich. Much luck with everything…
