Face On The T.V.

Amongst these experiences of the paranormal, ghostly, and unexplained I take a moment to interject a little down-to-earth misunderstanding.

What occured here was actually a fluke of technology - as was explained to me by Astyanyx - but it goes to show that mundane things can at times be easily mistaken for a far stranger experience.

Most of my experiences took place with an old friend of mine. This is probably because we practically lived together. His house, my house. It didn’t matter. We were always hanging out in one form or another.

His parents had unfortunately split years before I knew him, but this did provide us with three options: My house, his dad’s, or his mother’s place. This particular night it was his mother who had the dubious honor of putting up with us.

Our ability to stay up late and move around without getting caught was honed to an art form through the years. Most kids probably played silly games all night. Oh no, not us; we were sneaking around the furniture like little cat burglars. Crawling on our bellies, or rolling on our sides, we eventually made our way into the living.

Ah, the living room. Free access into the kitchen and cable TV. It also helped that his mother had a larger than average television.

One of our favorite things to watch when we could catch it was “Tales From The Crypt”. That little fellow and his laugh was a great way to spend the night. Yes, we were odd children indeed.

This night however we hadn’t caught our show. I don’t remember what it was we were watching. Was it news? It couldn’t have been too interesting, however. We decided to turn it off and go find something else to interest us.

This is where the situation gets a little strange. It wasn’t particularly creepy, but we were quite sure that once you turned off the television things were supposed to cease. The picture would slowly fade, people stopped moving. It’s just how it was.

Well, not this night. The guy on the television kept moving. It was off, there’s no doubt about that. The sound wasn’t there and the image was fading like it’s supposed to, but that didn’t stop him from turning his head.

You can imagine how perplexed we were about this. This isn’t the way things are supposed to work! My friend noticed it first and brought it to my attention. Several minutes were spent watching the face as we asked each other, in not so polite terms, what in the heck was going on.

A few minutes later the face fully faded, and we looked at each other with a couple of very confused expressions. With a glance and final confused shrug towards the television, we stealthily made our way through the apartment to something more interesting.

Would this be the reaction of normal kids, or had we simply heard and seen so much that, by this time, it wasn’t particularly frightening? Either way, as time went on, many more things were in store for us.
