A Lesser Greater Experience
With the various odd experiences that I share on Shadows In Motion one would think that the only things that I done with magic/k were wild and zany experiments. While they do make for entertaining reading, that’s actually far from being the case. The crazy experiments were in the minority. The majority of what I done were simple, day-to-day things such as the banishing ritual and the “four adorations”.
In a way, you could think of them as being no more exciting than prayer. Is prayer exciting? Well, that depends on the person, but it almost certainly doesn’t make for good story telling.
However, I do want to balance the crazy, exciting stories with an experience that was far from dramatic but was still exciting. At least, it was at the time.
The farthest that I progressed in my studies of Don Kraig’s “Modern Magick” was up to what he called the SIRP; the Supreme Invocation Ritual of The Pentagram. Personally I always found that name to be over exaggerated, and I think of it as the “Greater” rather than the “Supreme”.
Anyway, I was very proud of myself at the time because I memorized the entire ritual in a single day. How was this significant? There are two pentagrams to draw at each of the four corners, each with their own symbol to be drawn in their center, and each pentagram and each symbol requiring their own God Name to be vibrated (sort of like chanting) while drawing them.
Obviously I love symbols!
Being rather young at the time (roughly around 15 years of age) I was very interested in manifesting results. I wanted to feel heat from invoking fire, I wanted to feel calm from invoking water, and so on. This is true to an extent with the LBRP, so I was expecting a meaningful increase in each element’s manifestation with the SIRP! Mind you, I wasn’t expecting to start any fires or the like, but I was expecting to feel their presence more significantly than ever before.
Before I go on let me digress just for a moment. Thanks to movies such as The Craft, just about everyone is familiar with “calling the corners” with air, earth, fire, water, and spirit. What most non-pagans don’t know is that there are “higher” levels and “lower” levels of these elements. Depending on the ritual or means involved in invoking them, they can be more earthly or more spiritual.
This is what I failed to consider when I was younger! It’s why the SIRP produced results that were completely opposite from what I was expecting.
I performed the SIRP on a stormy night. My intention, obviously, was to directly affect the storm by channeling the energy into the storm and banishing it. The ritual took a little while to complete, what with drawing all of the symbols and vibrating the various names at the right times in the proper length. Eventually I found myself in the most powerfully charged circle that I had ever stood in.
…and I had no idea what to do with it.
Each quarter was charged with its respective element. Each element felt unique and individual, as though my circle had been cut into four equal pie wedges and I was standing in the spot where each point met.
If I had a necklace or some other tool then I could most likely have charged it for some purpose, but I didn’t have one. My original intention was to push the energy into the storm, but I found myself standing in a center of a spiritual nexus of sorts. I was surrounded in energy that was powerful, but too airy - too spiritual - to direct for physical earthly purposes.
The charge was fairly significant but I didn’t know what to do with myself or with it, so I basically stood in awe in the center. In a way, it was almost over whelming.
Eventually I went through the LBRP to banish the energy.
I was reminded of this experience when someone on a message forum asked the members of that forum how we knew that magic was real. Did we simply believe it, or did we have reasons why we use this thing called “magic” and expect it to work? The responses were varied. A short version of the above experience was my answer.
