Atlantis Sinking Has Scientific Basis

Discovery Channel :: News :: Study: Atlantis Sinking [Has] Scientific Basis

This is a fascinating article where some researches have found a plausible location for Atlantis.  This sunken city can be dated back to the time of Plato’s account of the city of Atlantis and is also near the “Pillars of Hercules“.

The article does say that the city does not meet certain other criteria.  However, there comes a point where we have to look at the tale in an objective manner.  I firmly believe that Atlantis existed but there is a great deal about the myth that I do not believe.

Take, for example, the army of 10,000 chariots.  That’s not only 10,000 people but at least 10,0000 horses as well.  This is a fantastical claim and clearly says “myth” to me.  The fact is, the island city was most likely significantly more humble than how these myths make it out to be.

Let’s take another look at the myth of Atlantis.  The story goes that the city was destroyed by the gods after becoming wicked and decadent.  This is an obvious interpretation of the catastrophe by the ancient people who would have witnessed the city’s destruction.  We need only to think back to the massive tsunami last December to know the type of massive destruction that can be wrought by earthquakes and tidal waves.  Now imagine what would have happened to a primitive island city that is struck by the full force of both the earthquake and the resulting tsunamis.

Surely any superstitious primitive humans who witnessed the destruction of Atlantis would have gaped in awe and horror at “the wrath of the gods”.  Such a tale would also quickly become exaggerated and, no doubt, would live on for centuries in oral tales.

It does not surprise me in the least that, through time and tales, the island city of Atlantis (which probably was a very important trade city at best) became a city of arrogant people who placed themselves above the gods.

To achieve this state, story tellers would have needed Atlantis to have something that placed them in a glamourous situation.  Vast armies would be needed to bolster their egos, advanced technologies (comparative to the world at that time) would be needed so that the people thought that they didn’t need the gods.  Excess living would quickly and easily be added to the tales.

Even the earthquake and tsunami of last December has garnered amazing tales of conspiracies, going so far as to say that one country or another controlled the earthquake and deliberately caused the destruction!  Certainly, in primitive times, what story teller could possibly resist the lure of turning Atlantis’ terrible fate into a fantastical tale?

This is why I believe that the city of Atlantis existed but in a much more humble form than what we find in the myths.  A city of farmers, or at best a busy trade hub, best fits what the real life city would have been like in those times.

To search for anything more in the quest for Atlantis is to assure defeat, for one can never catch a shadow, but keep your feet firmly planted in reality and we may finally have the real city of Atlantis.

Maybe
